Yoga Therapy as an Integrative Healthcare Practice
The rich and ancient tradition and wisdom of yoga provides the context for yoga therapy. The practice must be completely grounded in this foundation to retain its full potential for improving well-being and to be understood as a distinct integrative healthcare profession. When yoga practices are taken outside of this framework and applied through a solely biomedical lens, they may lose their effectiveness and therapeutic potential.
When a yoga posture is ‘prescribed’ to correct a muscular imbalance for someone with low back pain, it may be helpful but it does not address the underlying causes of pain according to the yoga therapy framework. In the same way, taking medicine to calm a symptom of pain does not address the underlying cause of pain.
If on the other hand, the patient with low back pain is seen through a comprehensive yoga therapy lens, the full array of yoga therapy practices and neurophysiology (ie. the branch of physiology dealing with the functions of the nervous system), the framework can be used to address the underlying causes of the patterns that perpetuate pain and suffering. From the patient’s view, they can use the philosophical framework of yoga therapy to facilitate a path toward well-being, regardless of whether the pain ‘resolves’ (which it often does but in some cases is not always possible). But when the underlying cause is addressed, the pain and suffering are diminished. This is the power of yoga.

Hi, I’m Shyla.
I am a certified yoga therapist, instructor, facilitator and (maybe more importantly), a highly sensitive person. My therapeutic journey has taken me beyond study of the healing power of yoga, to studying trauma and its power to take-hold of our behaviours. I specialize in guiding, facilitating, and creating safe environments for people to have transformative experiences that provide healing of physical, mental and emotional disorders.
